As the government fell, it seemed like Shakib Al Hasan's popularity and acceptance took a hit as well. Shakib had been elected as the MP for Magura-1 in the controversial 12th National Parliament elections. Many of the previous parliament members are now in trouble, with most staying abroad, and some have even been detained by law enforcement.
Shakib, however, hasn’t returned to the country yet, as he is currently playing for Bangladesh abroad. But after the India tour, the Tigers' next assignment is a home series against South Africa. Will Shakib play in that series? After all, he is now an accused in a case!
The interim government has reassured the BCB that Shakib will not be harassed unless he is formally charged. As a result, Shakib is expected to play in the South Africa series, according to BCB Cricket Operations in-charge Shahriar Nafees.
The former cricketer stated, "The Honorable Chief Adviser, Legal Adviser, and Sports Adviser have clearly communicated... The clear message from the Bangladesh government is that no one will be unjustly harassed due to the ongoing cases.
We believe the interim government has made their position regarding Shakib very clear. Unless there are issues related to injury or selection, I don’t see any reason why Shakib won’t play in the home series."
Nafees further mentioned that during discussions between the BCB and Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Legal Adviser Asif Nazrul, and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, assurances were made in favor of Shakib. "The advisers have made their stance and the government’s position clear. I don’t see any reason for doubt," he added.
